Farge power plant stops coal-fired power generation
• After 100 years, coal-fired power generation ends at long-established Farge site
• End of coal-fired power generation paves the way to a CO2 free energy age
• Decommissioning of the site by employees until end of 2025
Berlin/Bremen, 31 March 2024 – On the evening of 31 March 2024, Onyx Power permanently stopped generating electricity from coal at the Farge power plant site. This also marks the end of the plant’s availability under the German Substitute Power Plant Availability Act (Ersatzkraftwerkebereithaltungsgesetz) on behalf of the German government. The government had asked Onyx Power to extend operations beyond 2022 to ensure a secure energy supply in the wake of the war in Ukraine and the impending gas shortage.
Dr Peter Feldhaus, CEO of Onyx Power: ‘By ending coal-fired power generation at the Farge power plant, we are following the phase-out path defined by the German government and paving the way to a CO2 free energy age. This brings Onyx Power one step closer to our declared goal of phasing out fossil-fueled generation by 2030 and switching our portfolio to climate-friendly technologies.’
‘This day marks the end of an industrial landmark in the north of Bremen. For around 100 years, the power plant on the Weser reliably supplied companies and households with energy. This was made possible by a dedicated power plant team who always put their heart and soul into the plant. I am delighted that we will continue to work closely with some of these colleagues,’ says Jörn Neumann, Head of Onyx Power’s Farge power plant.
Employees at the site will be involved in the decommissioning of the power plant until the end of 2025. In addition to shutting down the plant, this includes emptying various systems and safely removing residual materials. After that, it is among other things conceivable that the geographically outstanding located site could be converted for hydrogen production.
