Bayernwerk Natur and Onyx Power sign letter of intent for the supply of climate friendly district heating from 2026 onwards
14th March 2022, Unterschleissheim/Zolling: Bayernwerk Natur and Onyx Power have signed a letter of intent for the supply of climate-friendly district heating from 2026. Considering comprehensive ecological criteria, the companies aim to continue their long-standing cooperation for a secure and reliable district heating supply in the communities of Zolling and Hallbergmoos as well as the city of Freising.
Bayernwerk Natur has been supplied with district heating from the Onyx Power power plant in Zolling since 1988. With the new contract, this is to become green and completely CO2-free by 2035. Onyx Power has undertaken to produce 55 percent of the district heating in a climate-neutral manner already in 2026. By 2035, this is to be gradually increased to 100 percent through the blending of green gases.
“In view of our energy-related climate targets, there is no way around decarbonized district heating in dense areas. Together with Onyx Power and Freisinger Stadtwerke, we at Bayernwerk in the Freising area now want to set the course for a green heat turnaround locally,” says Robert Budde, Sales Manager at Bayernwerk Natur, in connection with the joint signing.
The demand for district heating in the Freising region will increase in the coming years. To be able to meet the increased demand, Onyx Power plans to expand its CO2-neutral generation capacities. In the course of the transformation to a modern energy park, district heating is to be generated, among other things, in a new thermal power plant that can be operated in the long term with green gases and hydrogen.
Lothar Schreiber, site manager of Energiepark Zolling: “The Zolling site is currently undergoing a unique transformation process. By 2035, we plan to produce electricity and heat completely CO2-neutral. We would be delighted to continue to make the district heating generated available to Bayernwerk Natur and thus contribute to a secure energy supply in the region.”
Green district heating plays an important role in climate protection and rapid decarbonization. Through it, many households can be supplied with green heat efficiently and cost-effectively. This technology has great potential, especially in urban areas.
