Bremen-Farge power plant awarded tender to end coal-fired power generation
- end of coal-fired power generation expected by October 2022
- operation is planned to be continued with CO2-friendly energy source
- approval procedures for retrofitting projects have been initiated
Berlin/Bremen, 14 Juy 2021 – Onyx Power has been awarded the 3rd auction procedure contract by the Federal Network Agency (BNetzA) in the reduction of coal-fired power generation for the Farge power plant. Subject to transfer of the plant to the grid reserve, coal-fired power generation at the site will be discontinued by 31st October 2022.
“The award by the BNetzA is an important step for Onyx Power to establish sustainable and climate-friendly energy production. If possible, we would like to operate the Farge power plant beyond the coal phase-out converting to thermal utilisation of the CO2-friendly energy source waste wood. This would enable us to make a decisive contribution to climate protection maintaining a secure power grid,” Peter Feldhaus, CEO of Onyx Power.
“April this year, we submitted a project description for the conversion of the Farge power plant to the responsible trade supervisory office. We expect a decision from the local authorities by the beginning of 2023 latest. With the realignment of the site, we could offer our highly qualified employees a new perspective and maintain local value creation in the greater Bremen area,” Jörn Neumann, Head of Onyx Power’s Farge power plant.
If Farge is classified as systemically important by the transmission system operator and BNetzA, the plant could be held in reserve for a period yet to be determined. A decision by the BNetzA is expected by 31st October 2021.
