Zolling power plant awarded tender for termination of coal-fired power generation
- Commercial operation of the coal-fired unit will cease on 21.02.2025
- Further development of the site into a climate-friendly energy park
- Construction of modern thermal power plant to secure regional district heating supply
Berlin/Zolling, 14.10.2022 – Onyx Power has been awarded the tender in the 6th auction procedure for the reduction of coal-fired power generation by the Federal Network Agency (BNetzA) for the Zolling power plant. Subject to the plant being transferred to the grid reserve, coal-fired power generation at the site will cease on 21.02.2025.
Dr. Peter Feldhaus, CEO Onyx Power: “With the termination of coal-fired power generation at the Zolling site, we are continuing the phase-out of fossil fuel power generation at Onyx Power. This is in line with our corporate strategy, which envisages the phase-out of coal for all sites by 2030 at the latest. This opens an exciting new chapter for our company, which we will help shape with innovative generation solutions as part of the energy transition at our existing sites.”
Lothar Schreiber, Power Plant Manager Zolling: “We already started developing the Zolling power plant site into a modern energy park several years ago. We have already laid an important cornerstone with the operation of a climate-neutral biomass cogeneration plant. With the construction of a hydrogen-capable thermal power plant on our site, we now want to continue actively shaping the future of our location. This will enable us not only to provide a secure heat supply in the region, but also to maintain employment in the long term.”
Currently, the Zolling coal-fired power plant provides around 470 MW of electricity for the market and 150 MW for the local district heating supply. When the coal-fired unit is decommissioned as part of the coal phase-out process, the decoupling of heat will cease. From this point on, heat for the Freising area could be provided by a new, hydrogen-capable thermal power plant, among other things. Work is well advanced so that the supply of heat would be secured even after the end of coal-fired power generation.
