Onyx Power signs new district heating contract with Fernwärmeversorgung Freising and Bayernwerk Natur
Zolling, 13 February 2025 – Today, Onyx Power signed a contract with Fernwärmeversorgung Freising GmbH and Bayernwerk Natur GmbH for the continued supply of district heating. The Zolling Energy Park will continue to reliably supply district heating customers in the city of Freising and the municipalities of Hallbergmoos and Zolling with heat beyond 2025.
Roman Ritter, Head of Onyx Power Kraftwerk Zolling: “We are very pleased that we can continue the good and long-standing cooperation with our district heating partners. Together, we were able to agree on a concept that combines the goal of a reliable district heating supply with the demand for modern energy generation in the future.”
The contract between the district heating partners was concluded for the period from 2026 to 2030. Onyx Power has promised the district heating partners an installed feed-in capacity of 178 MW, which will initially be provided by the biomass cogeneration plant and the existing boiler and heating plants. The contract also stipulates that the existing plants will be technically overhauled and that the coal block will no longer be used for heat generation. This will reduce the CO2 footprint shortly. In the long term, the entire district heating supply is to be generated from renewable sources.
“The district heating supply in Freising and the surrounding area can look back on over 35 years of cooperation with Energiepark Zolling and Bayernwerk Natur. The new contract has created a sustainable basis that will enable the necessary switch to a renewable and CO2-neutral supply in the coming years. Although the implementation of the necessary transformation is both technically and economically challenging,” explains Andreas Voigt, Managing Director of Fernwärmeversorgung Freising GmbH.
The new district heating contract also lays the foundation for a long-term transformation path towards a fossil-free district heating supply. Parallel to generation with the existing plants, plans are currently being drawn up and new generation capacity will be added at a later date. From 2030, district heating is to be generated largely from renewable energies as planned.
Dr. Nick Seeger, Managing Director of Bayernwerk Natur: “Our top priority is to provide our customers with affordable and renewable energy. For this reason, we are delighted that we will be able to work together with our partners on a sustainable district heating supply for the greater Freising area in the future.”
